When the fog rolls in, it is hard to resist its impact upon civilization. In John Carpenter’s The Fog, the fog of nature is so irresistible that it might just crush those who think that they can control or predict it. It’s a classic tale of man and enlightenment “reason” attempting to overcome or subvert the deleterious forces of nature. In part, that is why the cinematic tale is so compelling. Humans need to find a way to overcome the raw power and implied alienation of Nature (from humankind), while appearing civilized in the process. The Fog deftly handles these universal themes, as it unfolds a tale about a local D.J. who warns a nearby ship about the impending fog, which may cause the crew to lose their bearings!
