Latino heroes aren’t often referenced in mainstream media, but that doesn’t mean they don’t abound in history books. From Aztec leaders to contemporary pop singers, these are the Latinos who have made a mark in Latin America and the United States.
Following the success of his solo show on Broadway, Latin History for Morons, stand-up comedian John Leguizamo brings this combination of laughs and sharp insights to CheapListen. Inspired by a desire to instill pride in his son for the family’s Latino heritage, Leguizamo really does his research. He soon gains a deeper understanding of the contributions Latinos have made to the world. His son may not have Civil War generals as ancestors like the bully who tried to make him feel inferior, but his heritage has all the spice and culture necessary to make a couple of continents feel proud.
In Latin History for Morons, a frenetic and boisterous Leguizamo takes the listener on an educational journey against stereotypes and through his narration calls attention to racial issues that he became aware of only after he took on this research. The listening experience is made all the more enjoyable by Leguizamo’s sound effects—you’ll even hear him imitate arrows swishing by—and his animated interpretation of all the characters he mentions, and thus brings to life.
John Leguizamo received an Emmy Award in 1999 and Latin History for Morons won a Special Tony Award in 2018.Please Note: Latin History for Morons contains adult language.
