Twenty-some years ago, a populist movement swept America. It was kicked off by a billionaire businessman from Texas named Ross Perot. It started on a popular television show, Larry King Live. In what seems like overnight, people across the nation responded to the call to “wake up America,” and began collecting petitions to put this man on the ballot. This book is a story about these people and what they did to take their country back.
They came from all walks of life. They learned how far it had fallen into the wrong hands. And getting it back wasn’t going to be easy. This book is about a movement that laid the groundwork for today’s populism that never went away. It went underground for a while and then resurfaced as the Tea Party Movement. Now, 24 years later, it looks like it is coming back full steam ahead.
On March 18, 1992, Ross Perot spoke at the Washington National Press Club. “America today is a nation in crisis with a government in gridlock…. I feel as owners of this country, if we’re going anywhere, you’ve got to send them a message: You work for us. We don’t work for you. Under the Constitution, you are our servants. Grow up! Work as a team. Serve the people. Solve the problem. Move on to the next one. Build a better country and stop throwing away money we don’t have.”
